Final stop at Catherine’s Landing

From Bowling Green to Hot Springs is only 185 miles, so a ‘nice’ relaxing drive, stopping once and arriving at Catherine’s Landing just at 3:00 on a really warm afternoon. The site we chose was a back in to the lake, so we had to unhook the CR-V at the entrance – can’t reverse with the toad on. Easy, wide roads and site – so we were in fairly quickly, hooked up electric and water, levelled Arvey – slides out – done, we’re getting good at this. Putting the external blinds on takes a few minutes but like I said – it is warm, 95 and humid, my skin was leaking. It’s time to rehydrate and cool down.

We didn’t venture out on the first day. Just walked Rusty around the campground, we’re beginning to learn we don’t need to pretend to be tourists. The next day we went to Garvan Gardens, our second visit. On our first trip to this area and to Garvan, Rusty started limping after about 200 yards so I ended up carrying him around to the exit and we hardly saw anything. This time he was fine and we had a really nice walk around, searching for the mystic creature topiaries, we found 5 of them, here are a few pictures of them.

I tend to want to go down trails that Connie is not too sure about, and when a sign for the Singing Springs and Millsap Canopy Bridge pointed into the trees, down a rocky path – we explored. When we got to the stream with a stepping stone in the middle I was a little concerned about Rusty. He skirts puddles on our walks, he flinches away from the waves lapping on a river bank – I crossed and he followed – onto the rock in the middle then onto the bank – he can leap wide streams.

We stopped near the exit to get a sandwich at the small café, and to cool down a little. There’s a model train setup and a couple of peacocks wandering in the train tracks, looking for all the world like 2 monster birds in a rural setting – model houses and tracks.

Last time at the landing I caught a nice sized trout, not so lucky this time, either wrong bait, time of year, water temperature or plain bad luck – nada. Our plan had been that Connie could sit outside Arvey while I fished from the bank just yards away – hadn’t planned on the branches and undergrowth, so down to the dock, still no luck.

It was so hot today, 95 feels like 105, that we decided to leave tomorrow and not Tuesday. There is no point in sweltering in a warm Arvey (tin can) – now we know why people ask for tree shade, us – we wanted satellite. So this will be the last note on this our nearly 7 week journey.
