Our first trip to Belgium – 2004

We flew into London Gatwick and waited for a flight to Brussels. Once there we caught the train to Brussels central and then changed to a train to Bruges (Brugge). It is so easy to travel around in Belgium without a car – so we did for a whole week.Apartment in Brugge, close to Grote Markt

We stayed in an amazing penthouse apartment a short walk from the Grote Markt in Bruges. A perfect location with 2 bedrooms, lots of living space, a kitchen and the bonus of a roof garden, the interior can be seen on the VRBO web site. We took a video of the inside so don’t have pictures – except on the outside – the top 2 floors are the apartment.

A lot of time was just spent wandering around the town and stopping to eat or drink, just soaking in the sights and the wonderful peaceful atmosphere. One day we decided to take a carriage ride through Bruges, the horse was taking a break when we noticed him kicking the feed bag, it was to loosen the oats – the cobbled streets had compacted the feed – smart horse.

We also took a couple of side trips, one to Ostend where we walked to the beach and harbor, stopping to eat a wonderful lunch at a small restaurant. It was a little blustery so we didn’t stay too long at the beach. We spent a short time in Brussels in the Grote Markt and had a beer in a bar just across the road from the Manneken Pis – promising ourselves we would return soon to spend more time in this amazing country/city – we did in 2011. That’s another trip.
