Holland 2007 – Volendam and Marken

We spent a short time in Amsterdam on the 2007 trip to Europe and after the Rijks Museum and other local sights decided to take a conducted bus tour that covered Volendam, Marken – a cheese factory and working windmill. This was a true tourist trip, included a clog making demonstration – we loved it.

The bus left Amsterdam and drove through the extremely flat Dutch countryside to Marken which was once an island, separated from the mainland in the 13th century following a storm surge, that isolation lasted for centuries. A dike that was constructed in 1957 re-linked Marken to the mainland.

After lunch in De Visscher we boarded the ferry to take us to Volendam, where the bus had driven to while we were touring Marken, it was a blustery day but luckily Connie had taken her Dramamine. Once we arrived in Volendam we had an hour or so just to wander around before we boarded the bus to go and visit the cheese and wooden clog stops of the tour, and what kind of tour would it be without a windmill.
